History

After being in the pipeline for over 25 years, the National Theatre was completed and opened in 1976, compromising three theatres including the Olivier, Lyttelton and Dorfman. The Lyttelton Theatre one of the smaller spaces in the theatre, seating around 890 facing a proscenium arch stage.

Best-known for producing small-scale musical revivals and plays, the National Theatre itself has brought huge success such as War Horse (2007), One Man, Two Guvnors (2011) and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2012), which have all transferred for extensive runs on the West End, as well as national tours.

In 2009, the venue began to host live screenings, known as NT Live, which allows their plays to be broadcast across the world. One of the most popular live streams was The Audience (2013), starring Helen Mirren.

Notable productions at the Lyttelton Theatre have included People, Children of the Sun, Strange Interlude and Liola (2013), The Light Princess and A Taste of Honey (2014), 3 Winters, Dara and The Motherf***ker with the Hat (2015) and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and The Suicide (2016), plus many more.
