On the Town
Based on a concept by Jerome Robbins, On the Town is a classic 1949 movie musical starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. Adapted into a musical, the story follows three American sailors who leave New York during wartime, meeting three very different women on the way.
On the Town originally received its London premiere in 1963 at the Prince of Wales Theatre, where it ran for a mere 63 performances. In 2007, the musical was revived by the ENO at the London Coliseum. Now, a revamped, restyled and large-scale version comes to the Open Air Theatre. With an incredible score by Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story), the musical features a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. On the Town includes classic songs such as “New York, New York” and “Lonely Town”.
Danny Mac (Hollyoaks), who came close to winning last year's Strictly Come Dancing, steps into the shoes of Gene Kelly, alongside Jeremy Tailor and Fred Haig. Further casting includes Siena Kelly, Miriam-Teak Lee, Lizzy Connolly, Maggie Steed, Naoko Mori, Rodney Earl Clarke and Mark Heenehan.
Ensemble members include Michelle Andrews, Myles Brown, Matthew Caputo, Edward Chitticks, Lavinia Fitzpatrick, Cristina Hoey, James Leece, Jacob Maynard, Rachel Muldoon, Melissa Nettleford, Emily Ann Potter, Mollie Melia Redgrave, Lisa Ritchie, Barnaby Thompson, Sam Salter and Brandon Lee Sears.
An Olivier Award-winning choreographer, Drew McOnie earned credits this year for In the Heights, The Lorax, Strictly Ballroom and the Open Air Theatre’s Jesus Christ Superstar. On the Town plays from May 19th to July 1st 2017.
