Amy Herzog’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated play 4000 Miles comes to the Old Vic in 2021, starring Eileen Atkins and Timothée Chalamet.

21-year-old Leo starts his summer on the West Coast, from which he sets off cycling across America with his best friend. After weeks of no contact, his family begin to worry; soon enough, though, he surprises everyone by turning up on the Manhattan doorstep of his 91-year-old grandmother, Vera. Their two lives – one starting and one ending – suddenly collide in her Greenwich Village apartment.

Eileen Atkins has worked in theatre, film, and television consistently since 1953. She has been recently seen as Queen Mary in hit Netflix series The Crown, and won the 2008 BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress and the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role in Cranford. She also recently starred in The Height of the Storm, on both the West End and Broadway.

Timothée Chalamet is a rising star in Hollywood. hHis recent performances in Call Me By Your Name, Beautiful Boy and Lady Bird – the former two having garnered him multiple award nominations, including for an Academy Award and two Golden Globes – were widely acclaimed. He will soon also be seen as Laurie in Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated screen adaptation of beloved novel Little Women. 4000 Miles will mark Timothée’s West End debut.

The principal cast is completed by Philippine Velge (Macbeth) as Bec and Siu-See Hung (Ghost Girl) as Amanda.

Matthew Warcus directs. He has been Artistic Director of the Old Vic since September 2015, and has recently directed two of the most acclaimed productions of the year; Present Laughter and Lungs. His 2014 film Pride was similarly acclaimed by critics and audiences.

A production that brings together an established luminary with a rising star in a story of beginnings and endings, 4000 Miles will play at the Old Vic.
