The streets are alive with sequins, feathers and the pulsating beats of Soca, which means only one thing, it’s time for Carnival. Yasmin Joseph’s hilarious and fearless debut play, J’Ouvert, is bringing this time-honoured tradition to life in the heart of the West End this summer.

J’Ouvert is a powerful examination of the British black experience and follows two best friends, Jade and Nadine, as they fight for their space in the world and battle to preserve tradition in a society where women’s bodies are frequently under threat.

The play is the second in a trilogy of plays forming the RE:EMERGE season by producer Sonia Friedman and director Ian Rickson at the Harold Pinter Theatre from May 2021. Other plays include Anna X and Walden.

J’Ouvert premiered at Theatre503 in 2019 and was the recipient of the 2020 James Tait Black Prize for Drama. Joseph was also nominated for the Evening Standard’s Most Promising Playwright Award. This production also marks the directorial debut of actor Rebekah Murrell.

Don’t miss J’Ouvert at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 16th June as this vibrant play transports audiences to their own West End Carnival.
