The RSC’s brand new production of Shakespeare’s farcical tale of mistaken identity, The Comedy of Errors, is transferring to the Barbican Theatre later this year.
The Comedy of Errors tells the tale of Antipholus and his slave Dromio who are separated from their identical twins following a horrific shipwreck. Determined to be reunited years later, they both embark on a journey to Ephesus to find them, but once they arrive a series of hilarious encounters ensue.
The RSC’s production will premiere at the brand new open-air Garden Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon this summer before embarking on a short UK tour, culminating in a six-week residency at the Barbican Theatre in November.
Phillip Breen directs the production, returning to the RSC following acclaimed productions of The Provoked Wife and The Merry Wives of Windsor. Breen is joined by Max Jones (designer), Tina MacHugh (lighting), Paddy Cunneen (music), Dylan Jones (sound), Charlotte Broom (movement) and Renny Krupinski (fights).
Casting for The Comedy of Errors includes Antony Bunsee (Egeon), Jonathan Broadbent as Dromio of Syracuse, Greg Haiste as Dromio of Ephesus, Guy Lewis as Antipholus of Syracuse, and Rowan Polanski as Antipholus of Ephesus.
The RSC’s last Barbican season took place in 2019 and saw productions of The Taming of the Shrew, Measure for Measure and As You Like It transfer to London. This year, the RSC are also adapting Hilary Mantel’s best-selling novel The Mirror and the Light, which will receive its world premiere in the West End in September.
With its themes of family reunion and a celebration of life, The Comedy of Errors is as relevant today as it was when it first premiered in the 16th century. Catch it at the Barbican Theatre from 16th November.
