His first new play since 2015, Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt will return to the Wyndham’s Theatre in August 2021.

In 1900, Vienna is the liveliest and most vibrant city in Europe, buzzing with artists and intellectuals. A generation earlier, Vienna’s Jews – who now make up a tenth of the population – were granted full civil rights by Emperor Franz Josef. Many who has fled pogroms in the East found sanctuary in Leopolstadt, the old Jewish quarter of the city. Half a century later, however, this population had rediscovered what in meant to Jewish in twentieth century Europe.

Tom Stoppard found prominence with plays such as Arcadia, The Coast of Utopia and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. He is also a prolific screenwriter, having co-written the screenplays for BrazilThe Russia House, and Shakespeare in Love, and has received an Academy Award and four Tony Awards.

Patrick Marber is set to direct. In 2016 he directed a revival of Tom Stoppard’s play Travesties at the Menier Chocolate Factory, after which a sell-out run transferred with the same cast to the Apollo Theatre in the West End. The revival was nominated for five Olivier Awards, before transferring once again to Broadway in early 2018. Marber has also recently directed Blue Remembered Hills for the National Theatre, The Old Neighbourhood for the Royal Court Theatre, and Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker.

The cast includes Sebastian Armesto, Jenna Augen, Rhys Bailey, Joe Coen, Mark Edel-Hunt, Clara Francis ,Ilan Galkoff, Caroline Gruber, Sam Hoare, Natalie Law, Noof McEwan, Dorothea Myer-Bennett, Jake Neads, Aaron Neil, Alexander Newland, Yasmin Paige, Adrian Scarborough, Griffin Stevens, Ed Stoppard, Luke Thallon, Eleanor Wyldand, and Alexis Zegerman. The children’s cast, comprising three sets of five children, includes Toby Cohen, Zachary Cohen, Olivia Festinger, Tamar Laniado, Maya Larholm, Daniel Lawson, Louis Levy, Libby Lewis, Jack Meredith, Chloe Raphael, Beatrice Rapstone and Montague Rapstone.
