Find your spirit at the incredible stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli‘s My Neighbour Totoro, returning to the Barbican Theatre for a strictly limited season. After winning 6 Olivier Awards, including Best Entertainment or Comedy Play, it is ready to inspire for a second time, as sisters Satsuki and Mei stumble upon the larger-than-life Totoro.
When two young girls and their father move to the edge of a forest, close to the hospital their mother is being treated, a great adventure awaits. Summer stretches out before Satsuki and Mei, and when they venture into the trees, spirits and strange creatures appear… including the wonderful and wondrous forest protector Totoro.
The My Neighbour Totoro play is adapted from Hayao Miyazaki’s much-loved 1988 film. In director Phelim McDermott’s production, incredible set designs and puppetry transform Miyazaki’s beautiful animations into a play that brims with joy and childlike awe. Most dazzling are the puppets from Basil Twist, built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop; audiences are kept waiting with bated breath for the incredible reveal of Totoro at his full scale.
This “utterly beguiling” (The Stage) play was an instant success when it premiered at the Barbican Theatre in 2022, with the company playing to a sold-out auditorium night after night. It went on to win six Olivier Awards and five WhatsOnStage Awards – the latter being voted for by the public, proving its massive resonance with theatregoers.
The show is created in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company, who also adapted Roald Dahl’s Matilda into the Olivier Award-winning musical; playwright Tom Morton-Smith; and the film’s original composer, Joe Hisaishi.
