Acclaimed British actress Gemma Arterton is returning to the West End for the first time in five years in Amy Berryman’s sci-fi drama, Walden at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

Berryman’s debut play tackles a world where climate change has left a devastating mark on Earth and humans have colonised other planets. Arterton plays NASA botanist Cassie who’s family life is rocked when her twin sister starts dating a climate activist. Can the family rift be overcome or is the bitter divide too wide?

Walden is the first in a trio of new plays transferring to the West End to form Sonia Friedman and Ian Rickson’s RE:EMERGE season, championing new and undiscovered writers. Other plays include J’Ouvert and Anna X.

Arterton was last seen in the West End in the Shakespeare’s Globe transfer of Nell Gwynn. She made her breakthrough as Bond Girl Strawberry Fields in the James Bond thriller Quantum of Solace. She is joined in the cast by Fehinti Balogun and Lydia Wilson.

This acclaimed play is a timely and urgent examination of the impact of climate change and our moral responsibilities. Walden opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre in May.
