The story follows Allegra, an elderly woman full of life and joy, with an irresistible urge to burst into song wherever she is. However, sometimes the orchestra plays only in her imagination, not in the real world around her. Her devoted brother Ronan and her carer Anna do their absolute best to keep life steady for Allegra, but how do you protect someone you love without dimming the light that makes them who they are?
The joyful Allegra play heads to the West End following a UK tour earlier this year, written by Olivier and Tony Award-nominated playwright Peter Quilter. His credits include End of the Rainbow and Glorious. Directed and choreographed by three-time Olivier Award winner Stephen Mear (Mary Poppins), the creative team is completed by set and costume designer Justin Williams, lighting designer Samuel Biondolillo, sound designer Russell Ditchfield, and video designer Ben Bull for Big Tele.
Dame Maureen Lipman plays the titular character Allegra. She is one of the country’s most beloved actresses, having starred on stage and screen over the years, with credits including Coronation Street, Carry on Columbus!, and Plebs.
The Allegra play cast also includes Bailey Patrick (Our Country’s Good) as Officer Rogers, John Middleton (ITV’s Emmerdale) as Ronan, with Elizabeth Bower (The Importance of Being Earnest) completing the small cast as Anna.
