Blithe Spirit
Book Blithe Spirit tickets to witness Jennifer Saunders’ hilarious séance skills
Queen of comedy, Jennifer Saunders is returning to the West End to reprise her performance in Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit this autumn at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
The play follows novelist Charles Condomine who invites the celebrated, but eccentric, medium and clairvoyant Madame Arcati to conduct a séance with the hope of gathering material for his latest novel. Things quickly start to spiral out of control when he is haunted by his temperamental first wife, Elvira who attempts to ruin his marriage to his second wife Ruth.
Blithe Spirit is one of the most celebrated plays of the 20th century and since its premiere in 1941 has been revived on stage countless times and adapted for television, film and radio, including Edward Hall’s 2020 blockbuster adaptation, which saw Dame Judi Dench step into Madame Arcati’s cloak.
Jennifer Saunders, who is best known for her iconic performance in the BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous and her extensive work with comedy partner Dawn French, drew acclaim from audiences and critics alike when Richard Eyre’s revival of Blithe Spirit opened at Theatre Royal Bath in 2019. The production then transferred to the West End, where its six-week season at the Duke of York’s Theatre was cut short due to coronavirus restrictions.
Saunders is joined by Lisa Dillon as Ruth, who is best known for playing Mary Smith in the BBC’s beloved drama Cranford, and Geoffrey Streatfeild, whose extensive theatre credits include The History Boys and My Night with Reg.
For the chance to see one of Britain’s finest comic actresses in Noël Coward’s ever-popular classic play, don’t miss Blithe Spirit at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 16th September.
