Stage and screen legend Ralph Fiennes is bringing his acclaimed adaptation of T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets to the West End for a strictly limited run of performances at the Harold Pinter Theatre this winter.
Mostly written during World War II when most playhouses in London were forced to close during the Blitz, Four Quartets is heralded as one of Eliot’s finest achievements as a poet. The compelling quartet of poems (Burnt Norton, East Coker, The Dry Salvages and Little Gidding) reflect upon survival, faith and enlightenment during a period of national crisis.
Fiennes stars in and directs this world premiere production, which was first staged at Theatre Royal Bath as part of a short UK tour. He is joined by Hildegard Bechtler (designer), Tim Lutkin (lighting), and Christopher Shutt (sound) on the creative team.
An Academy Award-nominee for his work on the film Schindler’s List, Fiennes has had a distinguished career on both stage and screen. He is most widely known for his performance as the villainous Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series and in the James Bond film Skyfall.
On stage he was awarded a Tony Award for his performance as Hamlet in a 1995 Broadway production of the play. In London, he was most recently seen on stage in the acclaimed National Theatre production of Antony and Cleopatra. He is a renowned interpreter of Shakespeare and has appeared regularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Eliot was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 for his outstanding contribution to poetry. Alongside Four Quartets, his best-known poetry includes the 1922 poem The Wasteland and the 1925 piece The Hollow Men. His most popular plays include Murder at the Cathedral and The Cocktail Party.
Fusing Eliot’s masterful skill of the English language and Fiennes compelling acting talents, Four Quartets is not to be missed when it opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre on 18th November 2021.
