Tom Hollander stars as Russian billionaire Boris Berezovsky in gripping new play Patriots, playing at London’s Noël Coward Theatre. It runs in the West End after a sensational, acclaimed premiere at the Almeida Theatre in 2022.
Patriots takes audiences back to 1990s Russia, after the fall of the Soviet Union. As key figures including Putin and Abramovich scrambled for position and influence in the brave new world of Russian politics, a patriot could quickly become a traitor. Key amongst these figures was billionaire Boris Berezovsky, who made his fortune in the 90s and spectacularly fell from Putin’s inner circle to an outcast who lived the rest of his days in London.
Tom Hollander stars as Boris Berezovsky, reprising his role from the original Almeida production. Hollander is a celebrated actor of stage and screen, with credits including In The Loop, a BAFTA Award-winning role in The Night Manager on the BBC, Baptiste and stage productions including Travesties at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
Other casting for Patriots in the West End includes Will Keen (His Dark Materials; The Crown) as Vladimir Putin and Luke Thallon (Leopoldstadt; Present Laughter) as Roman Abramovich.
This real-life story of betrayal, power and ambition as a new Russia emerges from the ruins of the Soviet Union is written by Peter Morgan and directed by Rupert Goold. Morgan’s credits include political and historical plays The Audience and Frost/Nixon, and Netfix’s The Crown. Goold is the Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre, with extensive credits including King Charles III, Ink and Albion.
A startling, gripping glimpse into the machinations of oligarchs at the dawn of a new world, Patriots is at the Noel Coward Theatre for a strictly limited season in 2023.
