Rose is one woman, but her life has been shaped by a history many others will recognise. Born in Ukraine, her journey from Warsaw’s ghettos to the shining lights of the American dream is a remarkable story of survival in the face of violent bigotry. Her moving account of the 21st century is a compelling reminder of how much has changed, and how much more we still have to fight against.
Both intimate in experience and broad in scope, Martin Sherman’s Rose first premiered at the National Theatre and on Broadway in 1999. In the years since, its story and message has only become more urgent as stories of refugees and antisemitism dominate the headlines once again. This most recent production was first seen online, before playing seasons at Hope Mill Theatre and the Park Theatre and picking up five-star reviews for Maureen Lipman’s unflinching, bold and often starkly funny performance.
Maureen Lipman is an Olivier Award winning stage performer, with credits including Oklahoma!, Daytona and Wonderful Town. On screen, she has become a familiar face for ITV audiences as Evelyn Plummer in Coronation Street.
Playwright Sherman’s other work includes Bent, Messiah and the film Mrs. Henderson Presents. At the Ambassadors Theatre, Rose is directed by Scott Le Crass, with design by David Shields, musical composition and sound design by Julian Star and lighting design by Jane Lalljee.
