Tim Piggot-Smith returns to figure-head the play as Charles, under the direction of Almeida Artistic Director Robert Goold. Piggot-Smith stars alongside Richard Goulding, Nyasha Hatendi, Adam James, Margot Leicester, Tom Robertson, Nicholas Rowe, Tafline Steen and Lydia Wilson. The play mirrors the style of a Shakespeare history play and is written in recognisable iambic pentameter and blank verse.
The play begins with the Queen’s funeral and the subsequent coronation of Prince Charles. His first official meeting is with the Labour Prime Minister, who wants to discuss a new bill on restricting the press. Charles III is shocked by the proposal and refuses to give it his Royal Assent, pushing the country to the brink of civil war. In a rousing speech on the need for a free press, the new monarch marks himself out as opinionated and radical. Should he follow his views or the wishes of his advisors?
Bartlett, author of ‘Cock’ at the Royal Court and ‘Earthquakes in London’ at the National Theatre, isn’t afraid to push boundaries with his writing. ‘King Charles III’ is up to date, relevant and controversial, and invites us to re-think our views on British leadership.
The Almeida is known for its challenging work and has produced several exciting West End transfers, including ‘Chimerica’, ‘Ghosts’ and ‘1984’. Their latest offering proves to be the most exciting theatrical event in recent months. Catch it at the Wyndham’s Theatre from 2nd September to the 29th November 2014.
