BAFTA Award-winning actress Kristin Scott Thomas returns to the West End in a huge new production of The Cherry Orchard play this autumn. Anton Chekhov’s gripping and poignant tragicomedy about a family grappling with change is a timeless masterpiece, and this new adaptation from Conor McPherson (The Girl from the North Country) plays at the Harold Pinter Theatre for a strictly limited season.
When Lyubov Ranevskaya returns to her childhood estate after years living in France, she finds that things aren’t as she remembers. With debts piling up, it looks like her beloved home, and its beautiful cherry orchard, will have to be sold off. Can she embrace this new future, or will the old order, and the pull of memories, leave her tangled in the branches of the past?
Chekhov’s final play, The Cherry Orchard is considered by many to be his masterwork. It was written during a moment of huge social and political turmoil, as the old order of aristocracy buckled beneath the weight of inequality and change. His other works include Uncle Vanya, The Seagull and Three Sisters.
This new version is translated and adapted by Olivier Award winner Conor McPherson, who previously adapted Uncle Vanya. His original works include Girl from the North Country and The Weir. The show is directed by Ian Rickson, who has also worked on The Weir, Mojo and Translations.
Kristin Scott Thomas stars as Lyubov Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard play. She previously won the 2008 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Play, awarded for playing Arkadina in Chekhov’s The Seagull. Her other theatre credits include Betrayal, Lyonesse, and The Audience. On screen, she won a BAFTA for Four Weddings and a Funeral and has also appeared in The English Patient, Darkest Hour and Fleabag.
