A powerful true story with Punch play tickets

Olivier Award winner James Graham’s searing Punch play arrives in the West End for a strictly limited season this autumn. Based on Jacob Dunne’s memoir Right from Wrong, this personal and resonant story about a young man convicted of manslaughter was universally praised during its world premiere at Nottingham Playhouse. Catch this “state-of-the-nation masterpiece” (The Telegraph) at the Apollo Theatre, where it promises to be one of the most talked-about productions this year.

Punch explores the aftermath of a single fatal blow. On a night out in Nottingham, nineteen-year-old Jacob Dunne throws one punch at a stranger, and multiple lives are torn apart. After serving time for manslaughter, Jacob is adrift until he’s approached by James’s grieving parents, Joan and David. Their decision to meet sparks a journey toward restorative justice and healing. A story that began with senseless violence turns into a powerful example of redemption, compassion, and the possibility of change.

Originally premiered at Nottingham Playhouse in 2024 and then at the Young Vic in 2025, Punch received widespread acclaim. Critics called it “deeply moving” (What’s On Stage) and “James Graham’s most moving work yet” (The Times). It follows his previous hits including Ink, Dear England, Quiz and Best of Enemies

Directed by Nottingham Playhouse’s Artistic Director Adam Penford, the creative team includes Anna Fleischle (production design), Robbie Butler (lighting), Alexandra Faye Braithwaite (sound and composition), and movement direction by Leanne Pinder with consultation from Lynne Page. Together they create the stark world of Jacob’s youth, as he moves from council estate to prison to meeting rooms with James’s parents.

The original cast reprise their roles, including David Shields in a “career-making performance” (The Observer) as Jacob Dunne, Julie Hesmondhalgh as Joan, Tony Hirst as David, along with Alec Boaden, Shalisha James‑Davis and Emma Pallant

Raw, urgent, and deeply emotional, James Graham’s Punch play is theatre that does more than reflect the world – it confronts it. This is a story about violence, loss, redemption, and the hope that lies in human connection. Secure your tickets now for this powerful West End transfer.
