BAFTA and Olivier Award winner Sheridan Smith makes an explosive return to the West End in 2024, starring in the world premiere of the Opening Night musical at the Gielgud Theatre. Based on John Cassavetes’ film, this rich and exciting show, about a troubled actress and the backstage drama that plagues her new Broadway play, features music by Rufus Wainwright and is directed by Tony Award winner Ivo van Hove (A Little Life).
On Broadway, a theatre company is preparing for the opening night of their new play. Its leading lady is the talented but troubled Myrtle Gordon, and she has more than enough drama to contend with off-stage. Things become even more fraught when she witnesses the death of a fan, and soon her turmoil spurs everyone involved in the show to put on the performance of their lives.
John Cassavetes’ 1977 film is transformed into an incredible new musical by one of Europe’s most bold theatre directors, Ivo van Hove. Van Hove has taken the West End by storm with his acclaimed productions A Little Life, All About Eve and A View from the Bridge, the latter of which he won an Olivier Award. He has teamed up with Rufus Wainwright for the Opening Night musical, which features original songs.
