Join a host of musical theatre stars as they pay tribute to the life and work of Stephen Sondheim in a dazzling West End concert. Stephen Sondheim‘s Old Friends returns for a full season at the Gielgud Theatre, after its 2022 gala performance sold out within hours and left thousands of fans asking for another chance to book tickets.
Led by Broadway legends Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga, an all-star company gather to regale London theatregoers with an evening of Sondheim’s greatest work. Taking songs from Sweeney Todd, Company, A Little Night Music, Follies and many more of the great composer’s musicals, this is “a glorious memorial service, each of the tunes a eulogy” (The Guardian) and a joyous celebration of Broadway’s best.
The Stephen Sondheim Old Friends concert was conceived by theatre producer and owner Cameron Mackintosh after Sondheim’s death in 2021, and staged as a one-night-only gala at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Demand was so huge that a livestream on the Prince Edward Theatre stage also went on sale, allowing even more fans to experience this wonderful evening of remembrance and music.
Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends features the Stephen Sondheim Orchestra, performing alongside Bernadette Peters in her London stage debut and Lea Salonga. Salonga is back in the West End for the first time since 1996, when she starred as Éponine in Les Misérables.
They are joined by a cast that personifies the very best of musical theatre, including Haydn Gwynne, Damian Humbley, Bradley Jaden, Gavin Lee, Jason Pennycooke, Christine Allado, Janie Dee, Bonnie Langford, Joanna Riding, Jeremy Secomb, Jac Yarrow, Marley Fenton, Beatrice Penny-Touré, Harry Apps, Bella Brown and Monique Young.
The show is directed by Olivier Award-winning choreographer Matthew Bourne and choreographed by Stephen Mear.
