Olivier Award-winner Conor McPherson’s brilliant new adaptation of the Anton Chekhov classic Uncle Vanya will arrive at the Harold Pinter Theatre in January for a strictly limited season, starring Toby Jones and Richard Armitage.
Uncle Vanya follows Sonya and – of course – her Uncle Vanya, living together during a sweltering summers on a crumbling estate deep in the countryside, with their on occasional visitor being the local doctor Astrov. However, when Sonya’s father suddenly returns with his beautiful new wife declaring that he intends to sell the house, repressed feelings and long-held grudges rise to the surface in ways that could potentially be devastating.
Acclaimed director Ian Rickson returns to Chekov, having been widely acclaimed for his landmark production of The Seagull in 2007. He reunites with BAFTA and Olivier Award-winner Toby Jones (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Birthday Party) as Vanya. Also starring is Richard Armitage (The Hobbit Trilogy, Hannibal) as Astrov, who returns to the stage for this first time since his Olivier Award-nominated performance in The Crucible in 2014. The production is designed by Rae Smith, with lighting by Bruno Poet, and music by Stephen Warbeck.
Don’t miss this spectacular coming together of talent as they bring new life into a Chekhov classic. Uncle Vanya plays the Harold Pinter Theatre from 14th January to 2nd May 2020.
