Prepare to be incredibly moved this autumn by My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?) -thousands have loved Rob Madge’s triumphant autobiographical since its debut in 2021, and now it’s back for one final hurrah! It heads to the Apollo Theatre for a strictly limited season, so grab your tissues for a profound story about growing up, identity and unconditional support that will stick with you long after the curtain falls.
Growing up in the West Midlands, Rob dreamed of becoming a star. As they recreate extravagant Disney parades from the comfort of their living room, the performances are captured on the family camcorder. These cherished memories, filled to the brim with Rob’s family members also making some additions, become the foundation for the touching and hilarious My Son’s a Queer play, which follows the rollercoaster journey of growing up as a queer and non-binary child. Although Rob is surrounded by unconditional love, there are some difficult times within this storyline that will deeply resonate. The show was created after their videos went viral on social media throughout the COVID pandemic.
My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) is written and performed by Rob Madge. Their credits include Les Miserables: The Arena Spectacular, Cabaret and Acorn Antiques.
The play features music composed by Pippa Cleary (The Great British Bake Off Musical, Bank of Dave The Musical), with lyrics by Madge and Cleary.
