Discover the spellbinding story of Shakespeare’s wife with Hamnet play tickets

Pull back the curtain on one of the greatest plays ever written in the moving and magical Hamnet at the Garrick Theatre. This lyrical story is adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling novel by the Royal Shakespeare Company

In the small town of Stratford-upon-Avon in 1582, natural healer Agnes Hathaway meets a young Latin tutor. They fall in love and marry, and soon two daughters and a son complete their family. But tragedy is waiting, and before his 12 birthday, Hamnet will die.

Inspired by the real life of William Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway, the Hamnet play is a story of love and loss that turns the spotlight onto the woman who married him. It weaves passion, grief and wonders of nature into an enthralling play that transfers to the West End direct from a sold-out season at Stratford-upon-Avon’s Swan Theatre.

Olivier Award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabarti adapts Maggie O’Farrell’s Women’s Prize-winning novel, having already proven her skills with historical drama Red Velvet and the stunning Life of Pi

The Hamnet play is directed by RSC Acting Artistic Director Erica Whyman (The Christmas Truce; Miss Littlewood), with set design by Tom Piper (White Teeth; The King’s Speech), lighting by Prema Mehta (A Day in the Death of Joe Egg), and music by Oğuz Kaplangı (A Museum in Baghdad).

Madeleine Mantock stars as Agnes in her RSC and West End debut. Further casting includes Tom Varey as Wiliam, Harmony Rose-Bremner as Susanna, Sarah Belcher as Joan, Peter Wright as John, and Elizabeth Rider as Mary.

This lingering, heartfelt tale of beauty and wonder born from the ashes of loss plays for a limited season in London, from 30 September 2023 – 6 January 2024.
