Catch Imelda Staunton on stage with Mrs Warren’s Profession play tickets

Imelda Staunton and her daughter Bessie Carter are the talk of the town this year, as they appear on stage together for the first time at the Garrick Theatre. George Bernard Shaw’s famously controversial Mrs Warren’s Profession play is a provocative and funny expose of Victorian class hypocrisy, as a young woman discovers that her mother’s past is less than squeaky clean…

Vivie Warren is a very modern young woman. She enjoys reading murder mysteries, sipping on whisky, and wants to become a lawyer. But her life is thrown into chaos when her estranged mother pitches up on her doorstep with several suitors, and matriarch Kitty’s real source of income is revealed. With mother and daughter at odds, can Mrs Warren get Vivie to understand her complicated past? Or is their relationship irretrievably broken?

Funny, scandalous and smart, the deliciously shocking Mrs Warren’s Profession play was so controversial upon publication that it was banned by the Lord Chamberlain for 30 years. With its depiction of brothels, sex work and a sharp deconstruction of hypocritical social values, this lesser-performed work from George Bernard Shaw, the man behind Pygmalion and Man and Superman, is a must-see, as this new revival brings it into the 21st century with a bang.

Olivier and BAFTA Award winner Imelda Staunton stars as Mrs Warren opposite her daughter Bessie Carter as Vivie Warren. Staunton is one of the UK’s best theatre actresses, with credits including Sweeney Todd, Follies and a barnstorming revival of Hello, Dolly at the London Palladium in 2024 – in “a performance that reaffirms her as one of British theatre’s greats” (The Telegraph). Carter has appeared in Bridgerton and Howard’s End on television, and most recently on stage in Dear Octopus at the National Theatre.

Director Dominic Cooke reunites with Staunton after Hello, Dolly and Follies, bringing another tale of socialites, subversive women and drama to the West End. He is a five-time Olivier Award winner, and has directed shows including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Crucible.

She lights up the West End every time she steps foot on stage, and this is another chance to see why Imelda Staunton is one of the most dazzling performers in the country! Get tickets for the fantastic Mrs Warren’s Profession play at the Garrick Theatre now.
