First up in Kenneth Branagh’s season of five plays at the Garrick Theatre is The Winter’s Tale. The play will star Branagh himself as well as Dame Judi Dench.
Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale is a tragi-comedy set both in a Sicilian court and a glorious bohemian countryside. The story follows the anguish of King Leontes of Sicilia, who accuses the King of Bohemia, Polixenes, of having an affair with his pregnant wife, Hermione. Plotting to murder Polixens, Leontes orders his wife be thrown in prison and for the baby to be banished.
On a lighter note, Act Two is filled with mirth and merriment as son of Polixenes (who managed to escape,) Florizel falls in love with a lowly shepherd girl Perdita.
Further casting includes Tom Bateman as Florizel, Jessie Buckley as Perdita, Jack Colgrave Hirst as The Clown, Hadley Fraser as Polixenes, Michael Pennington as Antigonus, Miranda Rasion as Hermione, John Shrapnel as Camillo, Kathryn Wilder as Mopsa, John Dagleish as Autolycus and Jimmy Yuil as Shepherd.
Additional cast members include Pierre Atri, Jaygann Ayeh, Vera Chok, Adam Garcia, Rudi Goodman, Matthew Hawksley, Taylor James, Pip Jordan, Ansu Kabua, Stuart Neal, Zoe Rainey and Michael Rouse.
The Winter’s Tale will run at the Garrick theatre in repertory with a production of Terence Rattigan’s Harlequinade, in which a troupe prepare for a performance of The Winter’s Tale, providing the season with some intertextuality and meta-theatrics.
The show is booking from 17th October 2015 – 16th January 2016. Book now to see Judi Dench and Branagh on stage!
