Following an Olivier award-winning run at both The Old Vic and the Noel Coward Theatre in 2017/8, Bob Dylan and Conor McPherson’s smash-hit Girl from the North Country will return to the West End for a limited run; it will play at the Gielgud Theatre for just eight weeks ahead of its Broadway premiere in 2020.
Set in a Duluth guesthouse in 1934, Girl from the North Country is a story of wayward individuals passing in and out of one another’s lives. The Laine family, owners of the guesthouse, are faced with the very real threat of homelessness, and family patriarch Nick is not only having to save his family from destitution, but cope with his wife Elizabeth’s troubling dementia. His children, Gene and Marianne, have their own struggles; Gene struggles with alcoholism, while Marianne faces the prejudice of being a black woman growing up with a white family. Their guests have stories of their own to tell, and when two new strangers arrive, a irrevocable catalyst is set in motion.
Katie Brayben (Beautiful, King Charles III) will star as Elizabeth Laine – the role originated by Shirley Henderson in 2017 – with Donald Sage Mackay as Nick, Colin Bates as Gene, and Gloria Obianyo as Marianne. They will be joined by David Ganly and Anna Jane Casey as Mr and Mrs Burke, Steffan Harri as Elias Burke, Rachel John as Mrs Neilsen, Sidney Kean as Mr Perry, Finbar Lynch as Reverend Marlowe, Ferdy Roberts as Dr Walker, Gemma Sutton as Katherine Draper, Shaq Taylor as Joe Scott, and Daniel Bailey, Nicholle Cherrie, Simon Gordon, David Haydn, Alan Vicary and Wendy Somerville in the ensemble.
Script writer Conor McPherson (The Weir, The Night Alive) directs, with musical arrangement by Simon Hale, design by Rae Smith, lighting by Mark Henderson, sound by Simon Baker and movement by Lucy Hind.
Set to the unforgettable music of Bob Dylan, the beautiful story of Girl from the North Country will play at the Gielgud Theatre from 10th December 2019.
