Based on the last days of Jesus’s life, told through the eyes of Judas, the Jesus Christ Superstar musical is a powerful story of betrayal, rebellion, idolatry, and humanity. The show is loosely based on the Gospels and their accounts of The Passion, and follows Judas, who worries that Jesus and the Disciples are seen as a threat to the Romans. As events unfold, both Judas and Jesus bear their souls in some of the most incredible musical theatre songs ever written.
This sung-through musical, also adapted into a Golden Globe-nominated 1973 film, features songs “Superstar”, “Gethsemane”, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”, and “Heaven on Their Minds”, co-written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. At the Palladium, it is directed by Olivier Award winner Tim Sheader, who restages his 5-star production from Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Described by critics as “gorgeous, thrilling, heavenly” (The Guardian), this is a must-see revival, told with beautiful clarity and epic vision.
Sam Ryder makes his stage debut as Jesus. After shooting into the stratosphere with his Eurovision entry “Space Man”, Ryder has become famous for his piercing vocal range – making him perfect for this famously tricky role. He is joined on stage by a rotating cast of actors playing Herod.
