Get ready to plunge into a world of sass, scandal and suckers with the hilarious Unfortunate musical, making a splash at London’s The Other Palace for a strictly limited run! This delightfully raunchy musical parody gives one of animation’s most iconic villains her own voice and tells the story of the Sea Witch not as a cackling baddie, but as a misunderstood legend… who can’t deny, being bad can be a lot of fun. With a pop-inspired soundtrack full of cheeky songs, laugh-until-you-cry humour and enough glitter to keep you sparkling long after the curtain falls, Unfortunate is a “wickedly camp” (Attitude Magazine) tribute to Disney’s most fabulous plus-size, octo-icon.
Unfortunate flips the familiar world of The Little Mermaid upside down, inviting you to see Ursula not as the villain in someone else’s story, but as the unapologetically bold heroine of her own. Alongside familiar faces reimagined with outrageous flair, the show dives into themes of self-acceptance, personal agency and identity with a satirical edge – all while spilling the tea on life under the sea. Whether she’s sharing backstage gossip, calling out fishy royalty, or belting out tunes about her “poor unfortunate souls,” Ursula serves up an origin tale that’s both defiant and uproariously funny.
Created by award-nominated book writers and lyricists Robyn Grant and Daniel Foxx, with music by Tim Gilvin, the Unfortunate musical comes to London following sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe, Birmingham Hippodrome and Southwark Playhouse, plus a six-month UK tour and even a Swedish production.
Directed by Grant, this revamped version features all-new set and costume design, fresh jokes and new characters – all designed to maximise the laughs and immersive fun. Grant and Foxx are also co-creators of Fat Rascal theatre company, who’ve been tickling our funny bones with other shows including superhero-spoof Vulvarine.
The creative team behind Unfortunate brings together puppetry and movement direction by Laura Cubitt, choreography by Melody Sinclair-Marsh, orchestration and music supervision by Nikki and Joe Davison for Auburn Jam, lighting by Adam King, sound design by Ian Dickinson, and puppet design by Mikayla Teodoro and Jasmine Swan, ensuring every moment is as dynamic and surprising as Ursula herself.
Wild, wicked and gloriously camp, don’t miss out on seeing the cult favourite Unfortunate musical. It’s one of the most talked-about musical comedies to surface in years: a clever, filthy, glittery dive into fairytale mythology told from the other side of the sea. Grab your mer-friends and get your tentacles on tickets for this unforgettable ride!
