Enjoy a riotous satire with Accidental Death of an Anarchist play tickets

Sharp satire that rips modern policing to shreds opens at Theatre Royal Haymarket this year, as Accidental Death of an Anarchist play transfers to the West End following rave reviews at Lyric Hammersmith. Tom Basden’s ingenious adaptation of the classic Italian satire stars Daniel Rigby in a performance that will leave audiences breathless with shocks and laughs.

An Anarchist has fallen to his death from a police station window, and the police rush to get their stories straight before the inquiry begins. However, their attempts to avoid another scandal are swiftly scuppered when a mysterious imposter known only as the Maniac is brought into custody. The Maniac leads the police officers in a bizarre and ridiculous reconstruction of events according to them and exposes the incompetence, corruption and idiocy rotting the police from the inside out.

Playwright Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist play is a classic of Italian theatre performed in over 40 countries since its premiere in 1970. It is inspired by the 1969 death of Giuseppe Pinelli while in police custody. Tearing into the political establishment and corrupt police force with anger, wit and laugh-out-loud comedy, the play is brought up to date for a modern UK audience by Tom Basden

Basden’s adaptation, directed by Daniel Raggett, premiered at Sheffield Crucible in October 2022 and swiftly transferred to Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, where it received 5-star reviews.

In the West End, Daniel Rigby reprises his role as the Maniac – a performance described by critics as a “tour de force” (The Spectator). Rigby’s credits include the BBC film Eric and Ernie, for which he won the 2011 BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor.

Other casting for the Accidental Death of an Anarchist play in the West End includes Tony Gardner (The Thick of It; Last Tango in Halifax), as Superintendent Curry.

This hilarious play hits back at the establishment and guarantees a riotous time in the West End over summer 2023.
