What happens when one of the biggest musicals in the last decade is dismantled and rebuilt into an improvised show? American troupe Baby Wants Candy brings their smash-hit show Shamilton! to London for a limited run this Autumn. An Oak Tree
Tim Crouch’s genre-defying theatrical experiment, An Oak Tree, is heading to The Other Palace as part of a season of work staged by Francesca Moody Productions this autumn. Hailed as one of the most influential and widely celebrated plays of the 21st century, the production will see a different guest actor, including Bessie Carter and Hamned Animashaun join Crouch each night, having never read or rehearsed the play. Garry Starr: Classic Penguins
Self-proclaimed penguin Garry Starr is on a mission; he wants to save literature from extinction by telling every Penguin Classic novel ever written! Damien Warren-Smith’s award-winning comedy show Classic Penguins takes audiences on a frenzied, hilarious adventure through some of the world’s most iconic works of fiction. History
Originally built in 2012 under the name of the St James Theatre, The Other Palace is the brand new venue that officially opened in 2017. Hosting a 312 capacity main theatre space as well as a smaller 120 capacity studio, the theatre is synonymous with playing new musical works and small-scale cabarets.
St James Theatre was built on the site of the former Westminster Theatre, which burned down in 2002. It then re-opened in 2012 with a production of Sandi Toksvig’s Bully Boy. Since then, the theatre has enjoyed a stream of successes, with most notable productions including the world premiere of Urinetown (2014), which later transferred to the West End's Apollo Theatre. Further stand-out musicals included Miss Atomic Bomb (2016), starring Catherine Tate, The Last 5 Years, starring Samantha Barks and Broadway's Rent.
Purchased by Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2016, the venue transformed into The Other Palace and is dedicated to hosting new and rarely-performed musicals. The venue re-opened under the leadership of Paul Taylor Mills in February 2017 with The Wild Party, starring Frances Ruffelle.
Further musicals include Duncan Sheik’s early musical Whisper House (2017), followed by circus extravaganza La Strada (2017). A series of new musicals premiered at the venue throughout 2017, including The Little Beasts, the National Youth Music Theatre's Imaginary and Some Lovers, by Steven Sater and Burt Bacharach. 2017 rounded off with Hershey Felder Our Great Tchaikovsky and Hollywood star Kelsey Grammer in Big Fish the Musical.
2018 began with Ben Adams' smash-hit new musical Eugenius!, followed by new musicals Myth the Musical, Orpheus - The Musical, Tess of the d'Ubervilles and Jabberwocky. Hollywood star Kathleen Turner arrived at the venue with cabaret show Finding My Voice, followed by Carrie Hope Fletcher and Jamie Muscato in Heathers the Musical, the return of Eugenius! and musical show Liza Pulman Sings Streisand.
September 2019 saw the UK premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical Falsettos. In November 2019, Amelie the Musical began performances, following a UK tour.
2020 kicked off with the Broadway transfer of Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz's cult musical Be More Chill, which plays at the venue through to May.
In September - December 2023, Ian McKellen and Roger Allam starred in new two-hander comedy Frank and Percy for a limited season.
Hit jukebox show Cruel Intentions: The '90s Musical opened in London at The Other Palace in 2024. Babies, the brand-new pop-rock musical, opened at The Other Palace in summer 2024, followed by Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World for a limited run. In late summer, Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist made its London debut as it reigns The Other Palace.
In 2025, new musical Saving Mozart had its UK premiere at The Other Palace for a limited summer season, followed by 50 First Dates: The Musical and acclaimed true-crime play Kenrex, starring Olivier nominee Jack Holden.
In 2026, audiences could watch Disney villain origin story (and hilarious spoof) Unfortunate, followed by new comedy musical World's Greatest Lover and Hot Mess. In Autumn/Winter 2026, a season of Fringe favourites from Francesca Moody Productions plays at the venue, including An Oak Tree and Feeling Afraid As If Something Terrible Is Going to Happen.
